A5 = S1

Act Five, Scene One

  1. Why do Lorenzo and Jessica remind each of the stories of classical lovers?  (Black Pg. 183-185, p.182 gives specific examples, Blue Pg.107-108) Of how important love is and how people will go to such extents for their love ones, for example Troilus and Cressida in the Greek camp.
  2. What are Portia's feelings as she approaches the house?  (Black Pg. 189, Blue Pg.105)
  3. What is the first argument to break out? ’By yonder moon I swear you do me wrong, In faith I gave it to the judge's clerk’ (Black Pg. 193, Blue Pg.107)
  4. How do Gratiano and Bassanio try to justify parting with the rings, are they successful? Their wife's were still mad about them. so still not quite sure how to explain it  (Black Pg. 193-197, Blue Pg.108-110)
  5. Was Bassanio right to give away the ring, give reasons for your thinking. Not really I think he mad a really bad move which it just made his relationship with his wife broke up.
  6. What effect do these arguments have on Antonio?  (Black Pg. 199, Blue Pg.95-96)
    It leaves him ashamed....?
  7. Portia and Nerissa have the rings. What does this prove to Antonio, Gratiano and each a Bassanio? I think they felt awkward and ashamed. about how they were boasting in the court and how their loved ones/wife were in the event/court.
  8. How do Antonio, Lorenzo and Jessica benefit from news that Portia brings? They rejoiced a little bit but still had some problems of the rings. [I think this is the most reasonable answer I think I can come up]
  9. Complete this quote to show the effect these arguments have on Antonio?  I once did lend my body for his wealth, … I dare be bound again, my soul upon the forfeit that your lord will never more break faith advisedly’ (Black Pg. 199, Blue Pg 111)
