Osmosis Experiment

 What is Osmosis?

Osmosis is a specific type of passive transport where it mostly relates to the movement of water through a semi-permeable membrane.

Solubility - The capability to dissolve.

Solute - the substance being dissolved [water]

Solvent - the liquid that does the dissolving part [sugar/salt]

Solution - the mixture that forms as result of combining together. [product]

Concentration - More particles more concentration, less particles less dilute.

Experiment

The experiment includes filling 3 beakers with the same volume of water. one beaker must be mixed with sugar, another one must be mixed with salt and the last one shall be left on its on natural state. All beakers will then need to have 1 gummy bear or any product that has sucrose that is soluble in water.

Hypothesis - based on personal thinking and conclusion, I think that the beaker mixed with salt will make the gummy bear absorb more water to try and balance out the concentration and the sugar-mixed water will more or less have same or lesser water absorption than the salt.

Salt Water - it started off with the gummy bear surrounded with water up to a volume of 50ml. fast-forward to the next day the gummy bear marinated in salt water somehow managed to grow smaller than its original size before being in salt water.

Sugar Water - started off also with the gummy bear submerged in water that is up to 50 ml. After letting it be immersed in water it manage to also grow in size and mass as the tap water gummy bear but a bit smaller.

Tap Water - it started off the same as both the other two gummy bears but after letting soaked in water till the next it ended up growing in size.

Was your hypothesis correct for each? No, the gummy bears that was either soaked with sugar or normal tap water grew in size and mass whilst the gummy bear that was soaked in salt grew smaller.

Did the bear get bigger or smaller? the gummy bears submerged in tap water and sugar-water grew in size while the salt-water gummy bear went smaller.

Does that mean that the gummy bear was:

Hypertonic?

Hypotonic?

Isotonic?

The gummy bear is hypertonic compared to the solution

Passion Project Progress

In Wananga, we have been working on making a planned schedule for our individual or group passion projects. For my group 5 people working on our own manga/comic. We have been constantly adding details and more information. Ou r passion project is Creating a manga about our daily life in school. We have chosen this because we want to share our story with others. There are five of us making a manga script about our daily life in school. We will be making this manga in paper-like 3a paper and every single person has to do one thing, what I'm doing is making the template and the writing, the other two will be making a story of the manga and the last person will be practicing the drawing stuff. We will be making this project in the DVC room because I need to do the template of the boxes of the drawing. The material we need is paper, then we need a ruler and a pen.

So far we have managed to start on our introduction a starting phase for our comic. We have done a few parts of our first chapter and we are starting to draw it scene by scene. We assigned every single member of our group their own specific jobs or tasks to do while making the comic.

Apirana Taylor : Sad Jokes on a Marae

Tihei Mauriora I called

Kupe Paikea Te Kooti

Rewi and Te Rauparaha.

I saw them

grim death and wooden ghosts

carved on the meeting house wall.

In the only Māori I knew

I called

Tihei Mauriora.

Above me the tekoteko raged.

He ripped his tongue from his mouth

and threw it at my feet.

Then I spoke.

My name is Tū the freezer worker.

Ngāti D.B. is my tribe.

The pub is my Marae.

My fist is my taiaha.

Jail is my home.

Tihei Mauriora I cried.

They understood

The tekoteko and the ghosts

though I said nothing but

Tihei Mauriora

for that’s all I knew.

Pathos, Logos and Ethos

In English class, we have been studying what Pathos, Logos, and Ethos are. We are then tasked to research its definition to showcase our understanding of it.

Conversation Agent - Valeria Maltoni - The Three Pillars of Persuasive Speech: Ethos, Pathos, and Logos

Pathos - Or the emotional appeal is one of the three modes of persuasive writing, mostly used to persuade the audience emotionally. Authors or writers use pathos to make the audience feel what they want to feel. This can be done by using an emotional tone or words to invoke sympathy or empathy from the people the authors want to aim their writing to.
Example
'if I don't take my learning seriously, I will soon see the struggles and suffering ahead of me.'

Logos - Is where the authors write about their writing with the use of logic on their audience. This mode is for when writers want to use facts or citing important and relevant statements to further make the audience feel the significance of the writing by the use of logical reasoning. In this mode of persuasive writing, the use of jargon or advanced vocabulary may come in handy to help enforce your point of view on a logical argument.
Example
'in all of 4 years of me walking through the same street, I have never seen a dog not barking at me at the first sight.

Ethos - lastly, Ethos is the ethical appeal of the three modes. It is to convince the audience how reliable and trustworthy the author is trying to tell them. This is a way for the author to use persuasive skills and language to help feel the audience feel as if their writing is worth listening to and reading. This can be accomplished by making the use of vocabulary at the appropriate level for the audience that the authors are trying to aim for. It is also a way for authors to show their skills, accomplishments, and lineage.
Example
'if my writing is below your level of expectation, then at least consider that I am still young and have much more to learn so that I can be better and achieve your level of expectation.'

These three components of persuasion are effective to make the audience persuade to read your argument for whatever topic.

What are we doing? We are learning a combination of Pathos, Logos, and Ethos to help us in our persuasive writing.
Why are we doing it? It is to help us be effective and precise when it comes to persuasive writing.

ESOL Class Trip Opinion

A Class trip or a School outing can be educational and enjoyable at the same time. Yes, there will be elements of observing and studying what you are learning in the place. But at the same time, you may just end up having a fun time or even being able to do activities. I think that it does go both ways since not only do you study for whatever topic you may have whilst be a trip but you also get to experience the fun and enjoyable sides of the trip. Although some may be purely for the purpose of education but at least you get to get out of class for a while and be in a different place other than being at school all the time.

Matariki Reflection Post

Matariki is a celebration time of the year where the harvest from seasons is plentiful and the before coming of Winter. Matariki has a cluster of about 9 stars in total including the parents and the children. It is also important for the Maori Culture as this is their way of restarting their Maori calendar. Matariki was used to determine the harvests each year dictating if it was good enough to harvest just before Winter. Matariki lasts about 3 days and is celebrated both in North Island and South Island in New Zealand. It could be perceived as the Maori New Year. It has some significant influence in agriculture in relevance to the Maori culture.

Disclaimer: This is my understanding of what is Matariki.

Reflection Post: Week 5

For my reflection post this week I will be stating about a new programme where I and my year level cohort [year 11] are put in this session called 'Mates and Dates' In order to accomplish much more relationships with friends or romantic partners.

For the first session that I was part of. To me personally, it was alright despite the kind of topic that was given to us to answer, but they do tell about the things the do matter in relationships either it be for friends or partners.
