Ice melting experiment

Aim: To observe water as it changes states from solid to liquid and then to gas.

Equipment:
  1. 250ml beaker
  2. Thermometer
  3. Bunsen Burner
  4. Heatproof mat
  5. Tripod
  6. Gauze mat
  7. Stopwatch
  8. Ice cubes
  9. Retort Stand
  10. Clamp
Method:
  1. Collect enough ice to half fill the beaker and place the thermometer in the ice cubes while you set up the rest of the equipment.
  2. Set up the bunsen burner, heatproof mat, gauze mat and tripod.
  3. Place the beaker on the gauze mat and gently clamp the thermometer so that it is held upright. The bottom of the thermometer should be low enough to be covered by the water but not toughing the bottom of the beaker.
  4. Record the temperature of the ice.
  5. Light the Bunsen Burner and start timing with your stopwatch.
  6. Record the temperature every 1 minute
  7. Keep recording until the water has been boiling for 1-2 minutes.
1. First stage -ice 0 degrees

2. Melting stage

3.  Another 1 minute - 30 temp.

4.. Another 1 minute - 53 temp

5.. Another 1 minute - 80 temp.

6.. Another 1 minute - 100 temp.

7.. Another 1 minute - 110 temp.

8. Boiling temperature [another 1 minute]

Findings:

the water boils after a minute in 110 temp
