Osmosis Experiment

 What is Osmosis?

Osmosis is a specific type of passive transport where it mostly relates to the movement of water through a semi-permeable membrane.

Solubility - The capability to dissolve.

Solute - the substance being dissolved [water]

Solvent - the liquid that does the dissolving part [sugar/salt]

Solution - the mixture that forms as result of combining together. [product]

Concentration - More particles more concentration, less particles less dilute.

Experiment

The experiment includes filling 3 beakers with the same volume of water. one beaker must be mixed with sugar, another one must be mixed with salt and the last one shall be left on its on natural state. All beakers will then need to have 1 gummy bear or any product that has sucrose that is soluble in water.

Hypothesis - based on personal thinking and conclusion, I think that the beaker mixed with salt will make the gummy bear absorb more water to try and balance out the concentration and the sugar-mixed water will more or less have same or lesser water absorption than the salt.

Salt Water - it started off with the gummy bear surrounded with water up to a volume of 50ml. fast-forward to the next day the gummy bear marinated in salt water somehow managed to grow smaller than its original size before being in salt water.

Sugar Water - started off also with the gummy bear submerged in water that is up to 50 ml. After letting it be immersed in water it manage to also grow in size and mass as the tap water gummy bear but a bit smaller.

Tap Water - it started off the same as both the other two gummy bears but after letting soaked in water till the next it ended up growing in size.

Was your hypothesis correct for each? No, the gummy bears that was either soaked with sugar or normal tap water grew in size and mass whilst the gummy bear that was soaked in salt grew smaller.

Did the bear get bigger or smaller? the gummy bears submerged in tap water and sugar-water grew in size while the salt-water gummy bear went smaller.

Does that mean that the gummy bear was:

Hypertonic?

Hypotonic?

Isotonic?

The gummy bear is hypertonic compared to the solution
