Gymnastics = Term 3

The last few weeks we have been focused on gymnastics in PE. The skills that I already had when I started gymnastics were a forward roll, walking backwards on the beam, a back drop on the trampoline.

I have been improving at doing a bit of the ones I don't really do that much in gymnastics like doing a bridge, as the way I see it is complex and complicated. Although I don't have the right physical traits for doing trampoline I managed to do it by persevering and giving my best.

I would like to learn to do more next term 3, particularly on the trampoline. I find the trampoline exciting as it gives me the good vibes when I bounce off and on the air, it feels so refreshing and inspires me to do more despite other things hindering me like peer pressure from doing the same thing as everyone.

Character 2 : English = Coraline

HOPE
There was a scene when everything seems lost as Coraline's recklessness and due to the rats that hindered her which made her lost all of her progress and temporarily stopped from stopping the other mother. But at the least moment the moon that was about to be covered by the button suddenly stopped as the black cat somehow managed to get the last remaining stone from the rat the evaded Coraline, Giving Coraline the confidence and courage to face the other mother once more.

Why is it important to have hope? = my thoughts
so that it prevents you from feeling the following: gloomy, hopeless, despair and other things you feel at that stage in life, as it can hinder your immensely small or big. Stay positive and always be cheery.

CURIOSITY
In Coraline the film, a particular scene was perfectly fitting for the word curiosity, as Coraline is always curious about things and how it can useful for her which gives her advantages. For Instance we see this when she was given the 'looking stone' which helped her curiously find the three stones that were preventing  the ghost children from being free instead giving them endless suffering

What is important about Curiosity = my perspective
when questioning a lot of things can have its benefits for example you may learn something new instead of the usual thing people teach you, also it can provide huge benefits like getting jobs that gives you a reasonable amount and something you like to do.

STRANGENESS = My choice
The black cat through out the film from my point of view, seemed like he was strange and mysteries as he just pops in whenever he desires and can also fade away. We see this when Coraline was apologizing from her wrong doings to the cat in which he slowly forgives her but in like a mysterious way as there was one part where he disappeared then appeared once again.

What am I learning?
I am learning about character strengths.
How does this work show my learning?
by picking 2 and making a short summary of what I think how it was portrayed in the film.
What am I wondering as result of my work?
Was there a scene that describes the word 'despair'

Symbols = English

What am I learning? I am learning about symbols.
How does this work show my learning? by making paragraph about symbols
What am I wondering as the result of this learning? How did the director come up with these cool ideas.

The Key
Pictures = references
Image result for Coraline the keyImage result for Coraline the door

In Coraline, A point of view shot about the black key was used precisely. For instance Selick used a point of view shot to portray the black key when coraline found the door. This shows us the capability of the black key as it can open the strange small door as the other keys would not. The director did this to make the key look like a plot device, as the person who wields it can cross dimensions and such. Coinciding with this, as Coraline goes into a deep slumber a strange rat suddenly started to attract the attention of Coraline, thus she followed the rat which leads to the strange door. This reminds the second time Coraline approaches the secret door as the situation was the same but Coraline was more eager to into the other world considering how wonderful it was there.

The Button Eyes
Pictures = references
Image result for Coraline buttonImage result for Coraline button
But that was not the end of the fascinating mysteries that the film Coraline holds. A high angle shot was used to display the buttons. For instance when the director used a high angle shot to exhibit the button when the other mother gave Coraline her own black button eyes. This helped me see that the other mother had intentions to corrupt Coraline and gradually devour her soul as everything that lives in the other world has the button eyes. Henry did this to make us examine the button eyes as they look empty and disturbing as the normal features of a normal person's eyes or body wouldn't apply to the button. Coinciding with this. Coraline decline the offer of having the eyes thus the other mother starts to show her true colors.  The reminds me the time when the other father was being painfully manipulated somehow but shows no sign of pain.

Conversation Week - ESOL

Explain what Conservation Week is. To preserve and protect our country's unique plants, animal and environment. The Department of Conservation role or the purpose of the conservation week is inspire and encourage people to get involved and help out nature or New Zealand.

Explain 3 things young New Zealanders can do to help to conserve our plant, animal and environment
1.To reuse reusable bags
2. Avoiding items that contains micro-beads
3. Try to decline using single-use items such as plastic water bottles

Explain why is it important or not.

'Cleaning everything and tidying up may seem a bit too complicated considering we also do have our own things to do in life? Imagine the world being engulfed by rubbish and other things that hinder or harms the wild life and the environment. The living things that surround the earth slowly but surely dies off. But there is one solution, everybody could potentially work together and help out on cleaning earth to convert it into a better place, also for the new generations that are coming to experience what is life on earth without too much rubbish.

There are multiple ways of achieving this. One way that I found resourceful is to constantly use reusable bags whenever you shop or in general. As all around the world rubbish is everywhere especially in the sea, harming the wild sea life that in habits the ocean. For instance in this site 'National Geographic' we see the information given to us about what occurs around the planet regarding pollution and one topic I was intrigued was air pollution. Considering it was air related at first I thought it was probably not a huge threat but then as I started understood after seeing the part where it was responsible of the massacre of 8,000 people or more in Bhopal, India which made me become more wary about air polluted gases from trucks or factories.

Camera Angles, Movement and Shots - English

In the Film ''Coraline'' by Henry Selick high angle shots were used efficiently to portray the evil intentions of the other mother. For reference when Coraline and the other Wybie were walking towards home, the other mother told the other Wybie to smile but he did not do as he was ask thus the other mother looked down upon him with a grin. This shows me that the other mother has evil intentions with the other Wybie. The purpose of this was to show the viewers that the other mother was clearly the one behind the scenes forcing everyone to do their part to allure Coraline. Combined with the scene where the other mother said that she will fix Wybie up which made him smile forcefully. This aspect can be compared to when the other mother [or the piano] was preventing the other father to tell Coraline what was happening.

However this wasn't the end of it, the evil other mother was still lurking around making sure her plan was go to work. For instance a close-up shot was used when Coraline was asking the other father who was practicing piano, he sort of looked gloomy and his appearance started to differentiate. At that moment when the other father was starting to tell Coraline about the events that were happening, the piano hands or [the other mother] was disabling him from pointing out further. This shows us that the other mother really is crafty and intelligent. Combined with the room looking dull and empty just like the real world. it made the scene more disturbing and creepy despite being in the other world.

As the movie progress to the point where the other mother is now showing her true colors. The other world starts to look evil and sinister. We see this when the other mother was cleverly tricked by Coraline. This makes us understand that other mother was eager to finally catch her. but due to her eagerness she ended up being deceived, thus the protagonist managed to save everyone. The director did this to show that Coraline has a chance to prevail and escape the other mother. Coinciding with the shot combined with the dark and pale look of the room. This reminds of the time when Coraline finally noticed the other mother's true intention, in which she got stuck in the ghost children's room due to disobeying the other mother. As if she was in the hands of the Beldam all along.
Gradually, the movie comes to an end where the other mother is defeated. The real world starts to look less creepy and empty. We see this when Coraline finally gets rid of the key along with the other mother's hand in the well as the clouds are clearing. A wide shot was used very thoughtful to show us the viewers what the Pink Palace looks like. Instead of clouds, mists and fog covering the vicinity which hinders its full outline of the place. The director did this to show us that the other mother was gone temporarily as in the end where the black cat stands on the sign. He begins to fade away from existence. Coinciding with this the soundtrack was creepy and disturbing just like in the other world. Which reminds if the other mother or everything that was in the other world finally gone or not.

Colour : English

What type of colours are used in each world?

Real world.
-dark, grey, blues and greens
- nocturnal light

Other world
- Colours orange, artificial lighting, warm, welcoming, reds, greys

How do the different colour palettes change the feel of the story?

Real World
feel - sad. lonely, depressed, miserable, dusty, dull, old, dirtied, crowded
Other World
happy, bright, exciting, alluring, relaxed, clean, tidy and spacious,

Real World
Director
- gives us a sense about how Coraline feels- bored, sad
- shows the dad is exhausted and overworked

Other World
Director
- make it look like the kind of place Coraline would like to live in
- shows the other father is active and awake. this father has much more time to talk to Coraline.

Themes - Big ideas
Looks can be deceiving
Courage and bravery

Statement
Example
eXplain- how audience feel?
eXplain- why the director did this to show?
eXplain- How it works with something else?
Your Link- question, theme, another moment in the story
Juxtaposed
- the complete opposite
What if the colour palettes were reversed?

Color is important in creating the two worlds and showing the theme. ' look can be deceiving' This is shown when comparing the studys in the real and other worlds. The real world study is dull, dowdy and cold with a grey and blue color palette. This makes the audience feel like the space is miserable and unpleasant to be in. The director did this to show that Coraline is upset the father is too busy to spend time with her. Juxtaposed to this is the study in the other world. Artificial oranges and reds make the other feel warm, welcoming and enticing. Selick does this to show the audience that this is the kind of world Coraline would to live in. Color is used to make the other world feel like a safe place but it is actually a trap to lure in Coraline and allure her soul.

Lighting = English

How does Lighting enhance the story

Describe the light in each of the shot below.?
What is the effect pf this lighting for the viewer.?
Why do you think the director chose to light this scene this way.?

Brainstorm
How it makes us feel?
Why did Henry Selick do it?
Write a paragraph

Atmosphere/Mood - the way you feel in a situation
1. The real kitchen
dark, dull
 lighting from the outside
makes hose look old, moldy and old
would small musty
Cloudy, Rainy and Grey
Dowdy
Natural light

Effect
-sad
-bored
-lonely
-cold

it makes a clear comparison/contrast between the real world and the other world.
not everything in the real world is perfect
-show us Coraline isn't happy there.

Cold Light
-Bright white
-Sometimes blue
-Makes the room feel cold

Warm Light
-feels like its warm
-often yellow/orange
-warm and welcoming

2. The other kitchen
bright, warm light, welcoming
Artificial lights
bulb over the the table

Effect
-warm
-welcoming
-happy
-safe
makes the other world seem perfect
it is where Coraline wants to be in
the other worlds is to allures Coraline to stay in the other world.

Paragraph
when comparing the real world and other world kitchens, lighting is used effectively to enhance the story. The real world kitchen uses natural a cold light coming from the window to make the situation feel cold, bored and unhappy. The director did this to show the audience that Coraline isn't happy there. In comparison, the other world kitchen has an artificial warm orange light that creates a welcoming, happy and safe atmosphere. Selick used this technique to show that Coraline is happy in this perfect world. it is the wonderful trap to allure Coraline this can be compared to later in the film when Coraline realizes the other mother is evil. From this point the lighting in the other world duller like the real world to show Coraline doesn't want to stay there any longer.

In contrasts to other tunnel, the usage of light was efficiently used to bolster the situation. The real world uses natural light from the windows but it looks so dark as if it was night time
